On today’s MeMadeMittwoch, I’m showing a Hampden dress made from cotton fabric I bought during our honeymoon in 2019 in Bali. I’ve combined it with the Fuller Cardigan I made for the Christmas Dress Sewalong, which I’ve finally finished by adding the press studs. Both the dress and the cardigan are very versatile and are great as office wear but also for going out in the evening.
I sewed a toile of this dress last year already and made various adjustments so that I could start sewing the dress in January. The original pattern isn’t lined and has facings around the neckline. Since the fabric is on the thin side and I knew I wanted to wear this dress with tights, I lined the bodice with the same fabric and the skirt with polyester lining fabric. I followed a modified Burrito method as described here for the bodice so that all seams are hidden, including around the armscyes. The edges of the skirt lining are sewn into the button bands so that everything looks nice and clean from the inside of the dress. This wasn’t very complicated only the waistband was a little bit tricky: I attached the outer skirt and the lining skirt each to a waistband made from the outer fabric first. Then I attached the outer and inner waistband to the bodice as described in the instructions, treating the two bodice layers as one. Next, I closed the back waistband by stitching in the ditch of the lower seam (the one connecting the waistband to the skirt) from the outside, leaving open 2-3cm from the side seam. Then I inserted the elastic and attached it at the side seams of the outer waistband before sewing the rest of the waistband closed. The button bands are sewn shut on top of each other. Thanks to the elastic, no additional closures are needed to get in and out of the dress.
There’s some light puckering around the princess seams. Maybe due to the 2 layers of fabric? I adjusted this seam on the toile, maybe something went wrong when transferring the changes to the pattern pieces. I really like the dress anyway and enjoy wearing it. I’m very pleased to have found a good project for this fabric.
I thought I’d start posting a little roundup every month. This has turned into quite a long post after all!
I mainly worked on a Hampden dress this month. It will get its own blog post when it’s done.
Stricken / Knitting
Diese Färbung heißt Our Solar System (Unser Sonnensystem).
These socks were finished on 1st of February but since I worked on them all of January, they fit well in this roundup. The self-striping yarn is from Gauge Dyeworks, a Canadian indie dyer who creates amazing colourways. This colourway is called Our Solar System. The coloured stripes represent the sun and the planets while the grey stripes represent the distances in between. The darker and light sections stand of different units of length. It’s all explained in more detail here. I already knitted this colourway once using my circular sock machine into socks for my sister-in-law (Ravelry link) and once by hand into a Musselburgh hat (Ravelry link). Since I knew that these sock would be very long I worked in some increases into the leg (Ravelry link).
Lesen / Reading
I read Fourth Wing over Christmas and started reading Iron Flame straight afterwards. Both books are very enjoyable reads even though I had to roll my eyes every now and then. The dragons are by far my favourite characters 🙂 Here’s a good summary in English if you’re unfamiliar with the series.
Atlas: The Story of Pa Salt is the last book in the Seven Sisters Series by Lucinda Riley, who sadly has passed away. This book was finished by her son Harry Whittaker. I only discovered the series last summer and read my way through it book by book. The first six books tell the stories of the six adopted sisters searching for their families of origin with the help of some clues left behind by their adopted father, Pa Salt. The seventh book is all about the “missing” seventh sister. In the last book, we (finally!) learn more about Pa Salt. It was a great finish to this series.
Doing Time and Hard Time are the first two books of the Time Police series by Jodi Taylor, which is a spin-off of her St Mary’s series (some of the characters make an appearance every now and then). I’m a big fan of both! I enjoy her writing style and sense of humour a lot. This series is all about Jane, Matthew und Luke who join the Time Police as trainees. The task of the Time Police is to save the world from the effects of time travel. If you change something in the past (by mistake or on purpose), it has consequences in the present. Jane, Matthew and Luke – Team 236 or Team Weird – really don’t fit in with the tough men and women of the Time Police and have to fight for their place. Of course, pretty much everything goes wrong on their missions. I particularly love Jane’s inner monologues where her bolshy side comes out. Jodi Taylor has a small online community on her website which runs – among other things – a monthly read-along where one of her books will be discussed via Zoom at the end of the month. I missed this month’s discussion, luckily they are posted on YouTube. January’s book was Doing Time and I took the opportunity to continue rereading the whole series. I started reading Saving Time, the third book In January. The fifth book will be published in July.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi has been on my TBR list for a while and when I saw that the eBook was available from our library, I didn’t hesitate. It’s a short book translated from Japanese by Geoffrey Trousselot. This story is also about time travel but under very particular conditions: The time travellers have to sit on a specific chair in the café the book takes place in, which they cannot leave and they have to return to the present before the coffee gets cold. Each of the four chapters is about different travellers going back in time for very different (and mostly sad) reasons although there is a common thread running through the whole book. I liked the book, even though it was a bit sad, and it was the perfect palate cleanser in between the Time Polices books.
Life Time von Russell Foster ist ein Sachbuch über circadiane Rhythmen (also all die körperlichen Prozesse, die in 24-Stundenrhytmen stattfinden wie z.B. Hormonlevel), Schlaf und allem was damit zusammenhängt.
Life Time by Russel Foster is a non-fiction book about circadian rhythms (all those process in the body, that follow 24h rhythms such as hormone levels), sleep and everything else connected to both. As a rule, I only read one non-fiction book at the time and unlike fiction books, never before going to sleep to keep my head free and (ironically in this case) not disturb my sleep. For this reason, non-fictions books often last me weeks or months. I also prefer to read them as printed books rather than eBooks (my preferred format for fictions books, which I mostly read in bed). I started reading Life Time at the start of December and find it really interesting! It’s quite scientific but also includes anecdotes and explanations. As a (former) scientist, this makes reading particularly enjoyable and I think the topic is really interesting.
Und so so? / And other than that?
All in all, January was rather quiet. Which is good, as we’re be away a lot in February! Work was pretty busy and I didn’t plan any big outings on purpose. At the end of January, we went to a candlelight concert – that was lovely! A string quartet played film music by Hans Zimmer. The concert took place in a hangar (which is also a conference centre) where one of the Concordes is stored! The acoustics weren’t all that great. The candles were all LED candles.
On today‘s MeMadeMittwoch, I’m showing the robe I sewed for myself last year. I had been thinking about sewing one for some time and when the Cashmerette Club pattern Lygon was released, I knew I wanted to make it soon.
I bought the fabric from Abakhan’s in Manchester, who sell bolt ends and remnants of few a few metres’ length in addition to the usual fabric by the metre. These remnants are priced by weight and can be cut as required as long as there’s at least 1 metre left. I’m not sure whether this system is the same as the fabric coupons I keep reading about on German sewing blogs. I’ve found some real treasures there in the past! My hope was to find some drapey midweight viscose or similar but had no luck. Instead, I found this beautiful cotton with these amazing big tulips on it and bought two pieces of it (4.75m in total).
While I was cutting out the robe I noticed that the wrong sides of the two pieces were different colours and that one had small white spots on the right side only, which look like printing errors to me. For a dress, this would have bothered me but it’s hardly noticeable in the finished robe. There is enough fabric without spots left for a skirt or a dress. The robe was easy to sew although the many lines of topstitching along the collar, cuffs, belt and pockets took some time. I used French seams as much as possible although many seams are enclosed automatically (e.g., along the underside of the shawl collar). The belt can be left loose or attached with a single seam at the back. I chose to do the latter but it came as it had to come and the seam started to tear pretty soon. To fix this, I ironed some interfacing from the inside and sewed it on along the top stitching and perpendicular to it. That should do the trick.
I love my finished robe very much! It doesn’t get worn as much as it deserves but it’s perfect for opening the door when the delivery driver arrives very early or to just throw it over on a chilly winter morning while waiting to use the shower. I clearly need to integrate more “Starting the day sitting elegantly on the sofa with a cup of tea” into my life! I hope, this robe will last me for a long time.
The cardigan is finished but the fabric is a little too thick for the snaps I bought. I will need to sew buttonholes, which I don’t mind. It must have slid forward as the darts sit a bit higher normally.
As mentioned in my last post, I already finished my dress and wore it to my office Christmas party. I took a few photos that evening just before the party, I hope to take a few more in daylight.
The dress us very comfortable to wear and all in all, I am very happy with it. There is an odd wrinkle coming down from the neckline, I am not sure why. I should have sewn elastic into the pocket seams to stabilize them (like I did at the shoulders and the seam connecting the bodice and the skirt), they are a bit stretched out. I can live with these ‘issues’! I received a lovely necklace and ear studs for my birthday, which go very well with this dress.
I traced the pattern pieces for the Fuller cardigan this morning. The one I sewed recently (Version A) is a bit large so I traced a size smaller this time. I will sew Version B and have ordered some nice snaps.
I will go and see here the progress the others have made since last week.
Mel from 500 days of sewing is organising the Christmas/Holiday dress sew along this year over on the MeMadeMittwoch blog. I still really like my dress from last year’s sew along and enjoy wearing it but since we have two family gatherings happening at the start of 2024, I decided to sew myself a new dress with less glitter.
I decided to sew the new Cashmerette Grafton pattern, which comes with a choice of various bodices and skirts, which can be combined in many different ways. I decided on a combination of the fitted bodice, elbow length sleeves and an A-line skirt. Minerva started stocking a line of stretch velvet fabrics in September and the Chrysanthemums print caught my eye immediately: festive, a wintery print but not too Christmassy – perfect!
Since my work Christmas party is happening this week, I prioritised over other hobbies and finished the dress yesterday. I will post pictures another time, I hope to be able to take some the day of the party before I leave home. It turned out to be beautiful! The fabric is 100% polyester (I usually prefer natural fibres) so I used a thin viscose jersey for the bodice lining. I ended up shortening the bodice lining pieces by about 2 cm as they stretched out quite a bit and ended up being longer than the bodice made out of the velvet. The velvet is extremely slippery and wasn’t the easiest to sew with: no matter how well I aligned the edges and pinned them in place, something always moved out of alignment. Super annoying! The other annoying thing were the tiny fibres of velvet coming loose at the cut edges and getting everywhere, just like glitter – I will find traces of this dress until next year!
My plan is to cut out a cardigan out of black ponte de Roma, which will will go nicely with this and other dresses in my wardrobe (or still in the planning phase). But for now, I will go and see what the other participants are planning this year.
Last Saturday I visited two art exhibitions in Manchester with a friend from Knit Group. Both exhibitions were fantastic and very different so I divided this post into 2 part. This is part 1, you can find part 2 here. This isn’t something I do (or even want to do) every weekend but I am grateful for having a city full of such events at my door step.
Diese heißt “You, me and the balloons” und ist Teil des Manchester International Festivals.
In the morning we went to an exhibition of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (who’s 94 years old!) named “You, me and the balloons” and is part of the Manchester International Festival. As the name suggests, this exhibition is a collection of balloon sculptures. They are made from a materials that reminds me of bouncy castles and consist of many individual pieces sewn together. The first room was full of tentacle-like sculptures winding their way up to the ceiling. The floor, walls and ceiling are decorated with a matching print. This was both fascinating and a bit overwhelming.
From there, stairs led up to a viewing platform from which you could see the rest of the exhibition. Some of the sculptures are huge and best visible from the platform. There were sculptures of Yoyoi as a girl – one larger (12m) and one smaller (4.5m), various balloons hanging from the ceiling, clouds on which you can lie and see the sculptures from a different angle, a mirror wall offering yet another viewing angle, a giant pumpkin and more tentacles, this time in pink and white. We both particularly liked the latter, they felt like walking in an enchanted forest.
This is part 2 of this post, you can find part 1 here.
After a lunch break, we went to another exhibition: the Color Festival Manchester*. Street Art from over 30 artists is shown in an empty supermarket, all impressive in their own way. * I am not sure why they use the US-English spelling of ‘colour’. Thanks to a friend living in Paris, I know this took place there in the past. She sent me the link when she saw that it takes place in Manchester und London, and I am so glad she did!
We really enjoyed the black light area where visitors could add their own artwork. Our favourite artwork was in the same area:
In May, we visited my in-laws in Cardiff. Although we go down regularly, I hardly ever make it into the city centre. This time we stayed a little longer than usual and I managed to spend an afternoon in town. It was a very rainy day and I spent most of it in the old arcades and the indoor market.
The Lake District is a national park in the hills of north-west England. As the name suggests, there are many lakes. The landscape reminded me of the Scottish Highlands. We spent 4 days there in April, we booked a room in a BnB in Ambleside, which was a good starting point for excursions and well connected to the local bus network.
Unfortunately, it was raining a lot while we were there. On the first day, we took the bus to Keswick, a small town in the north of the park and visited a pencil museum next to the factory of pencil manufacturer Derwent. That was really interesting and perfect for the weather.
The next day we wondered around Ambleside. Unfortunately, the bridge house (a small house built over a small stream) was closed. We took the bus to Grasmere to buy some of the famous ginger bread. Next door to the bakery is a small garden dedicated to the poet William Wordsworth.
On the third day, we drove to one of the lakes, Ullswater. We took a boat to the starting point for a hike along the Aira Force waterfall, which was very beautiful! From there, we drove to Windermere. Thanks to a Google Maps Special, we drove along narrow lanes through some breath taking scenery. Unfortunately there wasn’t enough time walk around lake Windermere although we had enough time for an ice cream.
On our way home on the last day, we stopped at Castle Sizergh. The Garden is very beautiful and there are stained glass windows with German inscriptions in the caste itself! I couldn’t find out why. From there, we drove home. Again, this certainly wasn’t out last visit, the southern part of the Lakes is only a few hours drive from us. I can understand why so many people love to go on holiday there.
